Seven technology leaders—Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Oracle, OpenAI, and xAI—have signed a non-binding White House agreement to shoulder energy costs for their AI data centers. The 'Ratepayer Protection Pledge' commits these firms to develop independent power solutions rather than passing costs to consumers.

This move comes as US residential energy prices surged 6% in 2025, with projections indicating continued increases through 2028. Analysts note the pledge lacks enforcement mechanisms while warning that data centers may consume 12% of national electricity by 2028.

The Trump administration framed the agreement as a market-driven solution during a roundtable with tech executives. 'Build, bring, or buy' became the operative phrase for new power generation infrastructure—a tacit acknowledgment of AI's growing energy demands.
